The Heidrick Ag History Center is an agriculture and transportation museum. It showcases rare and unique agricultural machinery and vehicles dating from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. It also has a 45,000 square foot events and exhibition hall which includes rotating exhibits. According to an Opera House press release, the lineup includes a variety of Main Series and Family Series shows and two Rising Stars productions that include youth-only casts.

William Porter’s bravery and heroism, long a part of the theater’s history, are marked by memorials inside the building. The Yolo County Historical Society purchased the building in 1971 to ensure that it did not fall to the wrecking ball and bulldozer. Declared a state historical park in 1976, the Historical Society gave the property to the State of California in 1980; and in 1981, the restoration began.

My husband and I were both impressed by the series of ropes and sand bags used to raise and lower “wing and drop” scenery pieces in days gone by. Tours of the Opera House are offered every Tuesday from 2-4 pm, although private tours can be arranged at other times. My husband and I joined a knowledgeable tour guide on a recent Tuesday afternoon, eager to learn more about this historic gem. It combines the horseshoe balcony with an uninterrupted semi-circular seating arrangement and large orchestra seating area like the common theme in Italian Renaissance-Revival theaters.
As one of only four fully functioning 19th century opera houses left in California, the Guild and the community are eager to preserve the building and its legacy. During the restoration, the building was made structurally safe and “earthquake proofed”. Central heat and air-conditioning, a sprinkler and alarm system, and handicap access were added. An annex was built to house the mechanical equipment necessary for the above and for administrative office space, a will-call counter, the mid-level Lounge, and rooftop exterior deck. In 1990 with the help of the Woodland Rotary Club, the south side grassy “Rotary Court” was added to compliment the City’s Heritage Plaza. The interior of the Opera House has been painstakingly restored to the grandeur it enjoyed at the turn of the century.
Careful attention was paid to reproduction of the wallpaper friezes, paint colors, and carpeting. The main floor carpet was manufactured in England and shipped to the Opera House for installation. Comfortable main floor theater seating was built on the East Coast for installation, and the historic pew-like benches in the balcony area were repaired or carefully replaced. Woodland is located on flat land in the Central Valley (California), with the Yolo Bypass and the Sacramento River to the east and the Capay Valley and the Coast Range to the west. Woodland is a part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area but it retains a "small town" feeling partly due to the mileage between the city and the neighboring cities. About 9.2% of families and 11.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.0% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over. Woodland's origins date to 1850 when California gained statehood and Yolo County was established.
